It’s almost too much to handle: Big Freedia and Tank and the Bangas co-headline this double bill of New Orleans-based underground all-stars. Tank and the Bangas won NPR’s 2017 Tiny Desk Contest, exploding the typically acoustic space with their energy-at-eleven mix of funk, soul, gospel, rock, hip-hop and spoken word. The Bangleader is Tarriona “Tank” Ball, whose playful vocal versatility makes Nicki Minaj look like a two-trick pony, and the rest of the instrumentalists are crack improvisers. But the five-piece has high platform shoes to fill if it’s going to match the energy of Big Freedia, the queen of bounce. The veteran singer, dancer and entertainer has been an ambassador for New Orleans culture for a long time and has recently been featured prominently in hits by Drake and Beyoncé, who are both influenced by the Bayou sound.
