The New Mastersounds formed in Leeds, England, nearly two decades ago, but with its affinity for funk
and jazz, the quartet could have easily been spawned in New Orleans. Numerous trips to the Crescent
City and the music of Nola funk pioneers the Meters have clearly rubbed off on the act. Guitarist Eddie
Roberts, who moved to Denver a few years ago, also knows his way around jazz-funk guitar à la Grant
Green and Ivan “Boogaloo Joe” Jones. While the New Mastersounds forge some deep grooves on record,
their funky live shows are equally compelling. The group will team up with DJ Williams’ Shots Fired at
the Ogden to benefit Urban Peak’s programs for young people experiencing homelessness.
