Number 36: Beignets from Lucile's Creole Cafe
There's just something about the beignets, the little pillows of fried dough on the menu at Lucile's Creole Cafe, that are too tempting to pass up. They arrive at the table hot from the fryer and smothered with a thick blanket of powdered sugar. It's impossible not to make a mess with the dust of snow, and your fingers are likely to get a little burned as you try to pretend the beignets have cooled enough to eat. But in the end, there's nothing to do but give yourself over to this sweet indulgence, knowing that a little mess and momentary pain are worthy sacrifices for a treat this good.
