Cafe 13 sounds like your classic little cafe in your classic little town, but with Rick Macpherson in the kitchen, it could soon move up to bigger things.

Macpherson opened his place in downtown Golden in mid-December, and he's still tinkering with the menus. For now, Cafe 13 is offering soup and sandwiches from scratch to go along with a variety of pastries, remnants of the space's former occupant, 13th Street Bake Shop.

Before opening Cafe 13, Macpherson was the chef at Ski Tip Lodge outside of Keystone, a fine-dining place where he did a different four-course, prix fixe meal every night.

Now he's focusing on putting art on the walls as well as the plates, since Cafe 13 has three rooms where artists can show their work.

Cafe 13 is located at 1301 Arapahoe Street in Golden, and is open Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, call 303-237-1133.
