Much of Denver was saddened by the news that Le Central will be closing its doors on September 13, after more than thirty years as the go-to place for romantic first dates and festive gatherings over mussels, lobster and frites. But even as the restaurant says goodbye to its faithful customers (it will close at 2:30 p.m. Sunday), two new French restaurants popped up this week. Mark Antonation took a first look into Cafe Marmotte on South Downing Street yesterday — and Bistro Provencal also opened on Tuesday in Riverfront Park.
Bistro Provencal is the newest restaurant from chef Alain Veratti, who also runs the two Crepes 'n Crepes shops in town. His latest venture is open Monday from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Tuesday through Sunday from 8:30 a.m to 10 p.m. While there are crepes on the menu, they're not the focus. Instead, you'll find several styles of quiche, waffles both savory and sweet, and daily specials from Veratti and sous chef Jon Garcia, who also offers a dessert of the day. With Euro Crepes opening the last week of August, Francophiles should be plenty pleased for a while.

Gretchen Kurtz didn't make a French connection this week, but checked out the Good Son, a name translated from the French Bonfils, the name of the original theater in the Lowenstein Building where the latest eatery from the U Baron group makes its home. But happy-hour hunter Chris Utterback professed his love for all things Gallic when he visited Bistro Vendome. In other news:
