Last week workers at Simms Steakhouse got a rude surprise: A note posted December 3 in the servers' area announced that the restaurant would be staying open on Christmas. People in the hospitality industry expect to work odd hours, but they also expect more advance notice when the schedule change involves a major holiday, when plans and plane reservations have already been made. But the advisory from Simms, which is owned by Landry's, didn't acknowledge that. "Instead of succumbing to just missing Christmas, plan another celebration with your family," the note chirped. "Working on the holiday doesn't have to be a bad thing. With a little Christmas spirit and a great attitude, you can make the best of it. Not just for you, but for your co-workers and our guests!"
Just don't expect our readers to be among those guests. The responses came in fast and furious. Says Heidi:
My family was just talking about this. We feel this is the one of the worst displays of greed by a corporation that we have ever seen. We feel that shifts should be ONLY scheduled voluntarily, holiday pay should be at least double-time, and we think that all the servers, chefs, and all personnel forced to work Christmas Day should "accessorize" their uniforms in a Scrooge theme. I personally, will never frequent one of these restaurants again.
Shame on them. Making people work this holiday with so little prior notice is one thing, but that sappy note adds insult to injury.
I hope all the servers just don't show up. Shame on any guests that requested this as well.
