Despite losing status as the “it” sound of dance music, trance is obviously here to stay. Just ask Armin van Buuren, who has snagged the top spot on DJ magazine’s list of the top 100 most popular DJs for three years running, from 2007 through 2009. The fact that trance is no longer the sound of the moment obviously hasn’t stopped this Dutch superstar from winning the hearts and minds of clubbers the world over. You can call what he does cheesy, fluffy, overblown or played out, but his fans simply don’t care: They want what he’s providing. His weekly radio show, A State of Trance, recently completed its 400th episode, showing some serious staying power, and his albums and singles never fail to move big numbers. Wherever van Buuren plays, he draws massive crowds of bliss-seeking trance acolytes. So if hands-in-the-air breakdowns and simple, shiny melodies over off-beat bass lines are what you seek, catch van Buuren this Thursday, May 27, at Beta. He will not disappoint.
