San Francisco's Ty Segall is garage rock in the same sense that Thee Oh Sees and the Coachwhips are — meaning that its show is as disorienting for its weirdness and intensity as the music is. Woven into the stripped-down, ebulliently delivered rock and roll are warped sounds, straightahead noise, and vocals distorted by bad reverb that all but obscures the words but not the intention. Just as like-minded acts such as Eat Skull, Times New Viking and No Age have taken rock music back to a primitive state while infusing the whole with plenty of imagination, enthusiasm and inventive songwriting, Ty Segall is keeping rock music from becoming an ossified institution disconnected from its roots via passionate outbursts of youthful energy and raw creativity.
