Menopause the Musical and Hats! are for women at the end of their childbearing years; and Girls Only — The Secret Comedy of Women celebrates a female’s childhood and teenage years. But what about everyone who falls between the onset of menarche and menopause?
“We were right in between maturity and death,” says Luanne Buckstein, who, along with partner-in-crime Pamela Clifton, created That Woman Show to fill this missing link in women’s theater. “It’s just something different, and maybe a little more bawdy,” explains Buckstein. “It’s touted as a ‘broad show,’ ’cause we consider ourselves broads. So we do a Weight Watchers sketch and we do Shelly of Galilee, which is a take on finding an old diary in Sanskrit of a woman who has a thing for someone who lived back then. We do some musical stuff, and we do an improvisation where we take an old black-and-white clip and we do our old dialogue.
“Men are allowed,” she adds. “As we say, it’s funny enough for a man, but made for a woman.”
Catch That Woman Show, part of the annual Girls Night Out Comedy Series, at the Avenue Theater, 417 East 17th Avenue; the show opens tonight and continues at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and at 2 p.m. Sundays through March 15.
