In a metaphorical sense, the heart is what makes us love. In a literal sense, the heart is what pumps our blood — you know, the copious blood that gushes out of our necks when we get decapitated. Perhaps it’s that discrepancy between the metaphorical and the literal that makes Valentine’s Day and horror go so well together. Or maybe it’s just that sappy love gives us bloodlust.

Whatever the case, the My Bloody Violen-tine Film Festival promises to deliver lots of lovely fake blood and cheap, B-movie sleaze, all from local filmmakers with soft spots for eviscerated soft spots. “We have the talent here, we have the facilities, and we have beautiful, beautiful landmarks of nature,” says George Climer of Razorbill Productions, the company responsible for the event. “We want to create a Hollywood here in Colorado.” And if the films on display here don’t have quite the budget of Hollywood, they do have plenty of low-rent charm, which, when it comes to horror flicks, is really what we want.

The festival starts at 7 p.m. tonight at 3 Kings Tavern, 60 South Broadway; tickets are $10 for the films, a collection of grisly music videos from an assortment of local death-metal and horror-punk bands, and a zombie-vixens photo shoot. For more information, visit www.3kingstavern.com.
