There are a lot of bonuses to summertime outdoor movies: the stars twinkling overhead, the soft grass underneath, the atmosphere of magic. Of course, that atmosphere is shattered every time a driver honks a car horn. And then there are the flies committing suicide in your beer and the sweltering heat that never quite goes away, even after the sun has set. And because the movies start so late, you won’t get home till past midnight.

So the Boulder Theater has the right idea with its Beat the Heat Summer Film Series, where you can still bring blankets and lawn chairs, still hang out, mingle and drink beer, but all in the comfort of an air-conditioned auditorium.

Six outstanding films were chosen via a public survey for the series; tonight’s offering, The Royal Tenenbaums, tells the story of a family so dysfunctional that we guarantee yours will seem practically normal by comparison.

Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the film screens at 8, but stop by at 7 p.m. to pick up burgers and hot dogs fresh off the grill in front of the theater, 2032 14th Street in Boulder. Twisted Pine pints are $3, and tickets for the show are a mere $5. Call 303-786-7030 or visit www.bouldertheater.com for tickets.

June 22-Aug. 19, 8 p.m., 2009
