An unclassifiable force of musicianship, Los Angeles quartet Fishtank Ensemble blends a world of styles into one big live sound. Pulling from Gypsy, Balkan, Turkish, Greek and jazz traditions, the band puts its own swinging spin on rock and roll, led by the operatic vocals of Ursula Knudson.
“You can listen to the CD and somewhat get an impression of what the music’s like, but when you see us perform live, I think people are really excited and exhilarated to see that kind of music played together,” says Knudson, who also plays violin and saw in the ensemble. The cabaret show also features upright bass, percussion and guitar, creating a fresh take on sounds of the past and combining it with contemporary Gypsy-inspired rock.
Fishtank Ensemble plays with local act Potcheen tonight at the Oriental Theater, 4335 West 44th Avenue. Doors open at 8 p.m., and the show begins at 9. For tickets, $10 to $12, and information, visit theorientaltheater.com.
