For the filmmakers behind 2012’s Punk Jews, talking about modern Jewish outsider art wasn’t just about sharing the story of Hasidic hardcore punks Moshiach Oi! That band is the focus of just one of the six segments in this hourlong documentary, which also profiles Orthodox rapper Y-Love, the Amazing Amy Yoga Yenta, radical street performers the Sukkos Mob and more.

After meeting a variety of Jewish artists, activists and performers at Cholent, a regular New York City gathering of people expressing unconventional Jewish identities, Punk Jews director Jesse Zook Mann and producer Evan Kleinman decided to explore what it means to be Jewish in the 21st century. “Punk is the label that defies all labels, and that’s what we’re looking to do: break down the stereotypes that poison cultural integration and cultural communication and life,” says Kleinman of the film’s all-encompassing title.

Punk Jews screens tonight at the Elaine Wolf Theatre, 350 South Dahlia Street; doors open at 8:30 p.m., and the show starts at 9. A Q&A with the film’s producer and director will follow, and a food-truck street party, free beer and a live performance by Moshiach Oi! will round out the festivities. Party-goers are encouraged to wear costumes, with prizes given for the best punk attire. Tickets are $18 in advance, $25 at the door; for more information, visit maccjcc.org.
