You’ll be able to watch the game, have fun and enjoy all your favorite parts of a football match. Then, at halftime, the volume will be lowered and a discussion on the selected topic will begin. The format will give sports fans a chance to join in the conversation about political and civic issues related to sports, ranging from the number of openly LGBT athletes in professional teams to whether college athletes should be paid.
“People who spend a lot of time learning all the facts and all the plays and all the different players and coaches — that takes a lot of time and effort,” Weissman notes. “Folks who are interested in that sort of thing have the mental capacity, have the time, have the energy, are smart — there’s no reason that we can’t also talk about really important civic issues. But you don’t want to do it in the middle of the game, while stuff is happening. You want to watch; you want to have fun.”
