What happens when you ask a couple of Colorado mountain kids from Carbondale to redesign a classic sneaker in collaboration with California sneaker shoe retailer Bait and shoe company Ontisuka Tiger? You get a limited release pair of retro kicks appropriately branded Colorado 85 "6,200FT."
We connected with Patrick Liberty, half of the team of brothers that founded Ackomplish Clothing, which is not just a company but a movement. And its mission -- to bring fresh concepts and artful expressions to people around the globe -- was accomplished this week when GQ M named the redesigned sneaker "Sneaker of the Week." Westword: GQ, one of the leading authorities on men's fashion, named the Ontisuka Tiger Colorado 85 "6,2000FT" its pick for Sneaker of the week. What does that feel like? Patrick Liberty: It was great -- better than we imagined. I was told that when something like this happened, the experience wouldn't live up to the hype. They were wrong! I think people forget we have been in the business for nine years. It's a struggle being from Colorado when you are trying to break into the business. If you are not from New York or L.A., people question your ability to be creative.
Part of your mission is that what you design reflects the things that inspire you and your brother, Mike. What was your inspiration in the redesign of the Ontisuka Tiger 85?

We took our love for Colorado and laid it all over the design! The shoe is sentimental for me and my brother because it represents our six years when our office was in Carbondale. When you look at our version of the shoe, you will see Colorado represented throughout. The multi-color red shoelaces and the rip-stop toe and side panels are similar to the laces and rip-stop fabric found on hiking boots. The white shoe is a tribute to our Colorado snow, the blue to our blue skies, and the blue along with red and yellow pay homage to the Colorado flag. From design to sale, it took about a year and half, almost two years.
We also noticed some additional detailing. What was the inspiration behind the details? The tag is a mimic of a ski-lift ticket and denotes the number of the pair of sneakers. So if you purchased the 504th pair, the tag would list 1 of 504 of the limited edition, for true collectors. The insole of the shoe is a ski map; for legal reasons we could not use well- known Colorado ski resorts so we substituted friends' names and people who helped us establish Akomplish over the years.
What's with the name, Ontisuka Tiger Colorado 85, "6,200FT"?The original shoe was released in 1985, so we combined the shoe company name, the year the shoe was originally released and, of course, Colorado and 6,200 feet, which is the elevation of Carbondale, Colorado.
You mentioned that the Colorado 85, "6,200FT" is a limited edition release with only 504 pairs that will be for sale. Where do we find them in Colorado?
Akomplish is a wholesale brand and can be found in retail stores like Family Affair in downtown Denver, Division West in Cherry Creek, and Instillation in Boulder../.This particular shoe is will be released in-store at a store in California named Bait; there will also be an opportunity to buy the shoe online on Saturday, October 19.
