If David Letterman ever did the Top Ten Reasons for Running on Colfax Avenue, "Damn, that cop is fast" and "That hooker stole my wallet" would clock in at, like, numbers two and three, while "I need exercise" wouldn't make it as far as the cutting-room floor. But that's all about to change.

Today at 6 a.m., the first-ever Colorado Colfax Marathon starts at Aurora's Sports Park, 18601 East Sports Park Drive (just east of Tower Road), and continues along Colfax Avenue for 26.2 miles, ending at Colorado Mills shopping center in Lakewood. Runners can race individually or as part of a five-person relay.

If you missed the May 17 registration deadline — or if you’re not the sweaty, breathless type, but still want to be part of the race-day action — try the Java Fest at Fletcher Plaza, 9898 East Colfax in Aurora. Cheer on the runners, enjoy live music, sample coffee varieties and help fill in a seven-foot-by-seven-foot crossword puzzle, all gratis. For additional marathon information, visit www.coloradocolfaxmarathon.org; for the Java Fest, call 303-326-8FUN or visit www.auroragov.org/java.
Sun., May 20, 6 a.m.-2 p.m.
