The Pie's the Limit

Screw cupcakes and chocolate chip cookies: Good, old-fashioned pies are the dessert du jour, at least today, when Steve’s Snappin’ Dogs, Steve Ballas’s eponymous wiener joint at 3525 East Colfax Avenue, hosts the Best Tasting Pie Contest. More than a dozen local bakeries, pie palaces and restaurants will compete for dominance, as determined by a host of esteemed pie-worthy judges, including former Rocky Mountain News restaurant critic John Lehndorff, creator of the 2010 Pie Calendar and spokesman for National Pie Day.

"These types of contests are a fun way to showcase some of the excellent eateries we have here in Denver, and doing a pie event was only fitting, considering Colorado's own John Lehndorff is affiliated with pies on a national level," explains Ballas. The pies will be critiqued on the basis of taste, texture, crust and originality, with two pies — an apple and a specialty pie — ultimately named the victors. “First- and second-place winners will receive a framed certificate and, of course, bragging rights,” says Ballas.

Sweet.

The contest, which kicks off at 1 p.m., is open to the public; for more info, dial 303-333-7627.
