Warmest Greetings

Getting my husband to go to holiday light displays after dark in December is like pulling a whole mouthful of wisdom teeth simultaneously: If it's one degree below 45, the kid and I can just as well forget about it. Excuses, excuses. However, in the interest of more satisfying holiday family outings, the Wildlife Experience Museum has come up with an alternative that just might save my frozen butt this year. Back by popular demand after last year's debut is the museum's Winter WonderLights, which pairs the usual old outdoor trek with lots of warm indoor activities for the whole family.

Along with an expanded outdoor display featuring a wildlife theme that echoes what you'll find indoors, the museum offers screening of the original animated How the Grinch Stole Christmas four times nightly, visits with Santa and his reindeer and, new this year, cozy tours of the venue's permanent quarter-mile Globeology exhibit. Plus, you can further warm yourself with kettle corn and traditional hot cocoa, which, spokeswoman Tori Labs notes, can be spiked if you're of age. Woo-hoo!

Attend Winter WonderLights between 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. through Dec. 24 at the Wildlife Experience, 10035 South Peoria Street in Parker; admission is $6 to $9. Go to www.thewildlifeexperience.org or call 720-488-3300.

KEEP WESTWORD FREE... Since we started Westword, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Denver, and we'd like to keep it that way. With local media under siege, it's more important than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" program, allowing us to keep offering readers access to our incisive coverage of local news, food and culture with no paywalls.
Susan Froyd started writing for Westword as the "Thrills" editor in 1992 and never quite left the fold. These days she still freelances for the paper in addition to walking her dogs, enjoying cheap ethnic food and reading voraciously. Sometimes she writes poetry.
