Frank’s Kitchen just celebrated its three-month birthday yesterday, but diners get the present today.

The tiny cafe in the Whittier neighborhood — seating for ten, sixteen if it’s not too hot to sit outside — offered a fish fry last Friday that was so popular that Frank’s was out of fish by 2 p.m. So they’re trying again today. ” We think it’s an ideal meal to take home for dinner,” says Dina Berta, a former Rocky Mountain News scribe who owns the place with her husband, Frank. “We have enough for about thirty plates. We hate to sell out and turn people away, but we also don’t want to have to toss unsold fish. If people remain interested, we’d like to make this a regular Friday feature.”

The meal will again be pan-fried Pacific cod, coated in a Southern cornmeal breading, French fries, vinaigrette slaw and a slice of Italian bread for $8.50. “We’re getting a good diversity of customers at Frank’s, but this fish fry seemed to resonate with a lot of Midwesterners who came in talking about the Friday fish fries they grew up with in Minnesota, Wisconsin, etc.,” Dina Berta says.

Frank’s will start frying fish — as well as serving its regular menu — at 11 a.m. today and keep going until it runs out, or closes soon after 5 p.m., since the joint has now ended its extended summer hours. (Monday through Thursday, Frank’s is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. — and Saturday remains a day of rest.)
