For more than fifty years, Davies Chuck Wagon Diner has stood like a stallion on a strip of West Colfax, feeding greasy-spoon grub, like chicken-fried steak, to old-timers and curiosity-seekers who want a glimpse of the Davies Diner horse that hovers above the front door.
Four years ago, owner Dwayne Clark opened a second Davies outpost at 2601 West Alameda, but yesterday, while whizzing past the grafittied building, I spotted a “For Lease” sign, and then, a second sign, posted on the back door, confirmed the bad news: “Due to the economy,” it says, “We’re closed.”
A third location, inside a Howard Johnson’s hotel at 12100 West 44th Avenue, remains open, and the original address in Lakewood, according to the woman who answered the phone, is still galloping along.
