Fitz and the Tantrums appear to have absorbed whatever was in the water during the time Daryl Hall was rubbing shoulders with R&B legends of the late ’60s. In fact, according to an interview with Rolling Stone in 2010, singer Michael Fitzpatrick was told he sounded like Hall by none other than Hall’s own mother when the band appeared on Hall’s web TV show. Following 2010’s Pickin’ Up the Pieces, Fitz released “Money Grabbers” as a single that was prominently featured on the crime drama Criminal Minds. While the music is clearly steeped in the R&B and soul traditions of Detroit and Memphis, it’s Fitzpatrick’s passionate and electric interplay with co-singer Noelle Scaggs and solid backing by the band that keeps it from sounding like ersatz Motown.
