As disciples of the same Georgia music scene that spawned Col. Bruce Hampton and Widespread Panic, Outformation embraces the philosophy that rock can be both inventive and down to earth. Known for lead guitarist and vocalist Sam Holt’s ties to Panic (he doubles as a guitar tech for the act), the scrappy trio mints a product that bridges the exploratory bent of a jam band with the soulful grit of Southern roots rock. Outformation teams with Polytoxic (keyboardist CR Gruver is part of Outformation’s talented rotating cast of guests) and fellow Georgians Tishamingo for a string of Colorado dates this month. The group’s bass- and percussion-heavy sound — which recalls Panic with a smidgen of Jerry Joseph — provides a churning cushion that gives Holt’s soaring guitar lines and no-frills lyrics a soft place to land.
