Whether on the world stage or local stages, having been in a moderately popular band can have its disadvantages. Some will immediately discount what you do as a clone of your other projects, while others will expect you to stick to your so-called roots. That's why the heady, dark and driving catharsis of Snake Rattle Rattle Snake (due at the Meadowlark on Friday, August 7) comes as such a surprise. Instead of resting on its laurels, this six-piece, which consists of former and current members of Monofog, Hawks of Paradise, Space Team Electra and Bad Luck City, has forged new musical directions while building on the strengths of each of its members. Equal parts go-go-beat-based post-punk and moody yet aggressive synth pop, Snake Rattle Rattle Snake is proof that reinvention can not only be exciting, but electrifying.
