While it's cool seeing in the Flaming Lips in larger venues like Red Rocks that hold around 9,500 people, it's whole other experience seeing them at an intimate spot like the Belly Up Aspen, which holds around 400. Last year's show at the Belly Up was pretty damn epic, yet on a smaller scale, and when the band returns on Tuesday, December 27, it should be in the same ballpark if you're willing to shell out $165 for general admission or $375 for reserved tickets. Local act Vitamins have been tapped to open the show for the second year in a row.

The Lips also recently collaborated with Yoko Ono and the Plastic Ono Band on "Atlas Eets Christmas," and have also set up a site to hear "Infinite Christmas Sounds," which is streaming around the clock.

Keep Westword Free... Since we started Westword, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Denver, and we would like to keep it that way. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" membership program, allowing us to keep covering Denver with no paywalls.
