‘s latest effort, Pictures, sounds less like a dance record than it does an extremely well-executed mishmash of rock, hip-hop and the Hamburg native’s signature dance grooves. Several of Pictures‘ choicest cuts, bolstered by the vocals of Placebo’s Brian Molko, Neneh Cherry and Kellis, have successfully landed in rock and hip-hop clubs as well as traditional dance clubs. To call his recent work merely eclectic wouldn’t do it justice; Maas (due at the Church on Thursday, November 10) demonstrates a remarkable ability to combine different styles of music to create a sound that’s as vital as it is fresh. “First Day,” Picture‘s debut single, was one of the defining tunes of the summer, with Molko’s vocals shimmering and wailing over a dark yet catchy-as-all-hell dance-rock cut. If Maas’s work is any indication of the direction dance music is headed, there’s a lot to look forward to.
