Wednesday nights are a trip at Owsley's

When he opened Owsley's Golden Road (2151 Lawrence Street) last year, Jay Bianchi gave me a whirlwind tour of the spot, showing off the venue's multiple rooms and its massive patio, the only patio in the Bianchi brothers' empire, which includes Cervantes' Masterpiece Ballroom (2637 Welton Street), Quixote's True Blue (2637 Welton Street), Dulcinea's 100th Monkey (717 East Colfax Avenue) and Sancho's Broken Arrow (741 East Colfax Avenue). But while they don't all have patios, all of the venues cater to the jam-band set. In fact, Owsley's was named after Grateful Dead soundman and notorious LSD chemist Owsley Stanley.

So when I dropped by Owsley's last week, I was surprised to see two hip-hop MCs cutting it up while a DJ dropped beats on the decks. And in the back of the main room, a dozen people had set up tables where they were selling clothing and jewelry. I grabbed a beer and walked out onto the patio — so big it could easily hold a few hundred folks — where thirty or so late-teen, early-twenties (it was an eighteen-and-up night) were hanging out. A door off the patio leads to a room called the Stereo Wine Bar; here, two girls and a guy were trading turns at the decks, laying down dance grooves. It felt like a completely different scene compared to what was happening in the main room — and both of them were totally unexpected at Owsley's.

Turns out this was all part of the club's Wednesday-night feature, dubbed the Get Down — essentially a hip-hop showcase and electronic-dance club night combined with the occasional fashion show. Attention Deficit Media, which books the night, has lined up special events throughout the summer, including the Go Getter's Union Release Party on May 27, which will include performances by DJ Desire, Denver Avengerz and Whygee's Dance Party featuring DJ Sounds Supreme. While the Get Down seems to work really well in the venue's multiple rooms, Owsley's regulars may feel like they're tripping if they're not prepared for the Wednesday-night lineup, since the club features funk, bluegrass and jam bands like JGB, Toubab Krewe and WhiteWater Ramble on other nights. Tuesdays, of course, are reserved for the Grateful Jams.

More Monday action: Rockstar Aaron just added Manic Mondays to his Freaky Fridays at Rockbar (3015 East Colfax Avenue). He'll be spinning mostly '80s-era dance, new wave, rock and pop like the Cure, Yaz, Bronski Beat and New Order. In keeping with the '80s theme on Monday, the bar will serve Sex on the Beach and Fuzzy Navel shots for 80 cents each; there will also be $2 PBRs, $3 wells and no cover.
