Kim Cordova, the former Safeway bakery clerk who defeated longtime union boss Ernie Duran in 2009, has won another term as president of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7.
Cordova's battle for the union's top spot was detailed in our cover story, "Flour Power." She promised to eradicate nepotism, of which she said Duran was guilty because he hired his children, and increase the union's financial transparency.
The 2009 election was close, but Cordova eked out a victory. In fact, her entire slate of candidates won, beating Duran and his daughter, Crisanta Duran, who was running for union secretary-treasurer. Crisanta Duran has since been elected to the Colorado House to represent House District 5, which includes parts of west Denver.
This time, Cordova won "with a decisive 72 percent of the vote," according to a press release. We've left a message for her and will update this post if and when we hear back.
In the meantime, here's a statement from Cordova: "It's time for the labor movement to shout its accomplishments from the roof top because we know that when there is a strong labor movement, there is a strong middle class -- and that's good for everyone, while non-union companies like Walmart only drive down wages, displace decent paying jobs and are the major obstacle for rebuilding Colorado's economy.
"There are tremendous challenges ahead of us, and it is my privilege to continue to work together to meet those challenges to achieve a better life for Local 7 members and their families."
