Well, at least the cartoon's creators should be the award winners. Instead, Pat Bowlen (Broncos owner), Walter Isenberg (hotel mogul) and Curtis Fentress (DIA architect) will all be inducted into the Visit Denver Tourism Hall of Fame for their support and dedication to making big bucks off of tourists. In a better world, the 2009 Inductees into the Tourism Hall of Fame should be going to people who are helping to create buzz about the Denver mystique...

For more than a decade, South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker have drawn inspiration from their Colorado childhoods (using local legends Jake Jabs, Ron Zappolo and Casa Bonita) to create a cartoon that has shaped an entire generation's perception and interest of life in Denver.

Another good choice comes with his own tin hat. Look below to find out who:

Jeff Peckman's appearances on Late Night with David Letterman and Fox News to talk about his Extraterrestrial Affairs Commission ballot initiative help make Denver look like so much more than just another corporate convention destination. Samantha Horoschak's snarky commentary and Rachel Hultin's Anti-Blue-Mustang Facebook page have generated far more national press coverage than the entire Visit Denver staff has gotten in a decade.

Keep Westword Free... Since we started Westword, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Denver, and we would like to keep it that way. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism.
