Support the independent voice of Denver and help keep the future of Westword free.
Hoss Orwat had hoped to get Big Hoss reopened a few days after a kitchen fire in late June, then hoped for anytime in July. But now it looks like it will be August 14 before Big Hoss, his barbecue joint at 3961 Tennyson Street, finally is back in business.
When Big Hoss does open its doors again, it will have a totally new kitchen. "The front of the house will be the same," promises manager Sherry Boyer, with the addition of a few more TVs, but the back room is becoming "more of a cocktail area...more sports-friendly," with maybe a pool table -- and definitely no salad bar.
But that's fine. Because at Big Hoss, as Jason Sheehan noted in his review of the joint, it's the meat that matters.
Keep Westword Free... Since we started Westword, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Denver, and we would like to keep it that way. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" membership program, allowing us to keep covering Denver with no paywalls.
