Fifteen years ago, a Mellow Mushroom moved into the ground floor of the Tabor Center at 16th and Lawrence. It soon became a mainstay on the 16th Street Mall, catering to tourists and locals alike. And then a third opened in Lone Tree. But that's where the ownership group stalled out. by 2018, the downtown restaurant was the last Mellow Mushroom remaining.
Now it's gone, too, and in their comments on the Westword Facebook page, pizza fans are getting downright crusty about the place. Says Rebecca:
I used to worship the Holy Shiitake pie, but admit the service wasn’t fantastic. Seems like most of my old mall favorites are gone now.Adds Giovanni:
Many a lunch here, shooting the breeze with the bartender while squeezing in a couple of slices. That time seems like a distant past.Responds Adam:
Between the pandemic, inflation and the mall remodel that has dragged out twice as long as expected, the stores haven’t had it very easy this last half decade.Offers Mark:
Time to reload. Maybe a better pizza place will take its place. After all, it has the oven.Offers Luke:
Thanks for the update on the Mellow Mushroom! It's sad to see that business go. I used to work BOH at the location in Southglenn for almost six years or so before that location closed, and then I was at the Highlands Ranch location until that store closed. It's unfortunate that Shane and his family had to close the locations and I hope one day Mellow's corporate will try to come back out here!Comments Kari:
It wasn't anything like the brand itself! Plain, sterile and boring. I was very disappointed when I went. Buh bye.Concludes Kyle:
