"Thought this would be a good place to get chinese to nurse a killer hangover. It's dingy inside and the kind of place you think your missing cat would end up at...Do yourself a favor...and keep on walkin'." That sums up the sentiment of one Denver Yelper, who reviewed China Star, a homely joint at 2831 East Colfax that said Yelper will be pleased to know is now closed.
But not for long...Pepper Asian Bistro is taking over the space, and beyond the brown paper that shields the interior, which is still undergoing construction, is a freshly painted, saffron-hued room and a beautiful layered brick wall that stretches from the floor to the ceiling. No word on when it will open, but owner Shi Bing Ke is scheduled to appear in front of the Department of Excise and Licenses on Friday, February 28, to plead his case for a liquor license.
Keep Westword Free... Since we started Westword, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Denver, and we would like to keep it that way. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism.
