Green River Vibe

Sun Comes Up
CAM Records

From the opening cut ("Calling of the Angels") on Sun Comes Up, Green River Vibe's debut, it's pretty clear where the quintet is coming from: About halfway into a rock-infused reggae groove, the tune breaks down into a hip-hop interlude. The players, who all met while studying music at the University of Colorado Denver, have a good handle on reggae, rock and hip-hop, and they do a capable job of both fusing and separating the genres here. Steering into Sublime territory at times, they also take a far-out psychedelic trip on "So Be at Peace," with sitar and didgeridoo. And although they dig into some solid reggae-based riffs, a lot of the cuts are similarly paced, which makes the album feel monotonous at times.
