In 1988, the year the LoDo Historic District was founded, the Wynkoop Brewing Company became Denver's first brewpub. It's still a favorite hangout -- and not just because Governor John Hickenlooper first started serving the public here when he was a lowly unemployed geologist (or because Patty’s Chile Beer is named for Westword’s editor). Besides pouring beers brewed on the premises, the Wynkoop cooks up everything from shrimp tacos to buffalo burgers. And after your meal, you can head upstairs for pool or just move over to the large, convivial bar for a few more rounds. The turn-of-the-last-century space oozes history as well as beer: Take a look out the large windows to see how lower downtown is booming, then imagine what this part of town might be like if the Wynkoop had never brewed a beer.
