Jimmy Stofer has heard a lot of applause lately thanks to his gig as touring bassist for the Fray. When he’s not thumping for his newly flush employers, however, he’s just another local musician trying to get his band off the ground. Mirror E.P. , the latest from Dualistics, a combo that pairs him with drummer Scott Russell, is a step in that direction, but not a giant leap.

“A New Day” is the first track here, and the most interesting. The tune doesn’t qualify as a hook-fest, but the central guitar riff hits the spot, the harmonies darken at appropriate times, and the arrangement offers occasional sonic surprises. Unfortunately, rockers such as “In Between” feel a bit too studio-bound, and although Stofer, who plays most of the instruments, has a serviceable voice, it’s not quite up to the challenge of sensitivity showcases like “Last Closure.”

Stofer’s clearly a talented fellow. Still, he shouldn’t rush to quit his day job.
