I appreciate bands that try to do something different. I do. But, seriously, whoever came up with the idea of rapping over a horrific mesh of post-rock with jam-band tendencies — it sounds like Phish outtakes as produced by Tortoise — needs to sit down and re-evaluate their record collection and their life. Unfortunately, the meandering, pointless instrumental backing is actually the best part of The Americans’ sound. The raps are worse — awkward, charmless and completely lacking any kind of flow — and the lyrics showcase some of the most misguided attempts at clever I have ever witnessed. Put these pieces together and you have some sort of terrible hippy-hop, like 311 with all of the banality but none of the spastic energy.
