Maybe it’s bitterness, or creeping cynicism, or simply the fact that every new thing I hear has to measure up to the ever-larger pile of stuff I already know and love, but the older I get, the harder it is for anything to simply blow me away. Bottom of the City blows me away. From the opening one-two punch of “City City” and “Brown Cloud” to the epic “Anti-Suicide,” the Jim Jims have incorporated and synthesized a brilliant blend of punk and post-punk, no wave and New Wave into one breathtaking statement of pointy guitars, insistent rhythms, desperate vocals and gritty production. If there’s a better record released locally this year, it’s going to be an unbelievable year for music in the Mile High City.
