Lord, please deliver us from pretentious, ponderous bands aimed at adult contemporary radio and the soundtrack of the next big indie drama/romance. Overly polished, too clever by half and not nearly as deep as they would like to believe, Wadirum displays a self-indulgent and self-satisfied approach to banal, dull coffeehouse rock. There are a few interesting moments — the poor man’s Cat Stevens impression on “Quiet Place” and the track most likely to make that aforementioned soundtrack, the faux-country we’ve-all-got-regrets tearjerker “Telene at 22.” Some of the backing vocals and arrangements pique momentary interest, too. Ultimately, though, these are too few and far between, and too slight, to make much of an impact, making Letters I Never Plan to Mail a forgettable outing.
