In southern Florida, Mike Diaz has been evolving MillionYoung from a promising synth-pop project into something that doesn’t really fit into that whole “chillwave” category so much as it captures the image those of us living in colder climates have of warm nights and lazy days in tropical climates. Florida was pretty much ground zero for death metal and the starting point for both Tom Petty and Limp Bizkit. MillionYoung, however, is almost the polar opposite of any of that stuff, using guitars to weave gentle textures and generating rippling melodies over the top of soul-inflected, new-wave dance songs. Akin to breezy electro-pop outfits like Small Black and Washed Out, MillionYoung nevertheless has a flavor all its own.
