On its debut, Fingers of the Sun delivers songs that are sunny and upbeat without ever seeming superficial or trite. Lyrically, there is an uncommon level of sensitive observation and deep reflection that’s easy to miss when you’re caught up in the beauty of the album’s three-and-four-part harmonies — not to mention the transporting harmonies and psychedelic flourishes heard on “Heaven Only Knows” and “Cashmere Paisley Polyester.” There is a classic sensibility in all of these songs that many latter-day bands strive to attain, only to sound like a cut-rate copy of something better. With this collection of tunes, Fingers of the Sun has shorn itself of awkward displays of its influences to reveal a knack for crafting perfect pop.
