Swedish writer Erich Von Däniken is alive and well, lecturing on the influence of extraterrestrial contact on ancient civilizations. His writing, meanwhile, has evidently inspired song titles for this Irish band. Since forming in 2002, God Is an Astronaut has created dense instrumental music in the vein of acts like Red Sparowes and Isis. On its latest release, 2010’s Age of the Fifth Sun, the band incorporated more synthesized sounds without sacrificing the heaviness and ethereal darkness of its core sound. Often compared to Explosions in the Sky and Caspian, God Is an Astronaut is less ambient than either, but its melodies do have the same sense of infinite horizons created by the shifting currents of an alternately hypnotic and electrifying sound.
