London’s Florence + the Machine was spared the clumsy moniker of Florence Robot/Isa Machine when singer Florence Welch realized, en route to the band’s first show, that it wouldn’t work. From the start, the combination of the act’s northern soul and experimental electro-pop with melodramatic sonic flourishes proved a hit with audiences. The group’s 2009 album, Lungs, delivered a handful of hit singles and landed the band’s music in numerous films and television series, including, most notably, Gilmore Girls. Ceremonials, the outfit’s 2011 album, yielded even more singles, including “No Light, No Light.” Although in a March 2012 interview on MTV, Welch bemusedly dismissed rumors of being a member of the Illuminati for the “No Light, No Light” video, her stirring voice and the band’s music certainly are luminous.
