When Winnie Wenglewick of Denver’s Dangerous Theatre set out to write The Perfect Gift, an offbeat holiday play with a message, she looked inside her own life. And when rehearsals began, her two co-stars did the same.
“Since then, we’ve practically rewritten the whole script,” she says. “For me, this play is a personal journey. And all the stories told in it are real-life stories about each of us, the holidays, and how we view them.”
The plot of stitched-together personal tales revolves around Stacia, who works downtown and sometimes shares her lunch with a homeless man, Winter. On Christmas Eve, Winter invites her to share dinner with him and his buddy. “They end up under the bridge,” Wenglewick explains, “with a feast of stuff from the Dollar Store. They even have Christmas lights strung up under there.” She doesn’t want to give away what ensues — but, yeah, it’s a little bit inspirational and maybe a little treacly, too, and it has to do with imaginary friends who turn out to be less imaginary than Stacia originally thinks. “It’s like a cross between A Christmas Carol and It’s a Wonderful Life,” she adds, and she really means it.
The Perfect Gift open tonight at 7:30 p.m. and continues Fridays through Sundays and selected Thursdays through December 23. And the price is right — only $10 — for all performances, including Sunday brunch matinees.
