When Nancy Stohlman slinks on stage to sing with her band, Kinky Mink, she does the whole Jessica Rabbit lounge act, complete with sparkly dresses and smokey tunes. But the songs Kinky Mink performs aren’t lounge standards. Instead, you’ll hear reworked ’80s hair-metal classics like Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train” and Guns N’ Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle” reworked as lounge songs.
“One of the beautiful things about ’80s metal songs is that they have all this passion to them, but if you look at them from a musical standpoint, they’re very simple four- or five-chord progressions,” explains Stohlman. “We take all that heart and passion, but we take the musical composition and we make it complex, we make it rich.”
The result is a show that combines the elegance of lounge with the sing-along prowess of ’80s metal as Stohlman belts out songs from Billy Idol’s “White Wedding” to Metallica’s “Enter Sandman.” And while Kinky Mink started out as a cover act, the band now performs original songs as well, including the one the show is named after, a BDSM Christmas tune called “Tie Me Up for Christmas.”
