“I started off wanting to do a comparison between artists who moved here and started to help settle the state — the nineteenth-century artist — and contemporary artists primarily known as landscape painters,” explains Rose Glaser Fredrick, who curated Masterpieces of Colorado Landscape: A Then & Now Look at Landscape Painting in Colorado.

“It’s artists who, in my opinion, helped form what Colorado is today,” she continues. “And with the contemporary artists, I really wanted to show a variety of work. There really is a strong movement in landscape painting, a return to realism, and I wanted to show that with artists who are doing it very well and have a lot of integrity and a lot of knowledge.”

Soak up the landscapes today when Masterpieces opens at Foothills Art Center, 809 15th Street in Golden; the exhibit runs through July 8. Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for seniors and free for members, children and full-time students; visit www.foothillsartcenter.org or call 303-279-3922 for information.
