Once upon a time about a decade ago at 60 South — in the space now occupied by the almighty 3 Kings Tavern — a trio of DJs got together and launched a night that happened one Monday a month and was devoted solely to playing their favorite songs, tunes that ranged from Brit pop to Madchester to ’80s rock and everything in between.

Before long, Lipgloss moved to Fridays and became a weekly and then moved into its current home at La Rumba on 9th and Acoma, where it went on to become one of the longest running and most successful club nights in Denver.

Two of the original Denver 3, Tim Cooke and Tyler Jacobson, eventually moved on, leaving Michael Trundle (aka boyhollow) to keep things going with a host of other residents, including DJ Soup, Chase Dobson.

Trundle and his current fellow resident Option 4 will be celebrating Lipgloss’s decennial anniversary on Friday, June 24 at La Rumba (natch) with a special appearance by guest DJ Chris Baio from Vampire Weekend.

Jeff Kahn the estimable frontman of Skeleton of God, has formed a new outfit called Royal Talons. The trio recently posted the five songs it recorded with Steve Goldberg from Cephalic Carnage on Bandcamp.

Kahn says the new songs represent a slight departure from Skeleton of God and describes them as “super heavy at much slower, repetitive pace,” falling somwhere between Pentastar: In the Style of Demons-era Earth and Forest of Equilibrium-era Cathedral (“with our own thumb print, of course,” he points out). Catch Royal Talons on Saturday, June 18 at Old Curtis Street.

Looks like local hip-hop champion Joe Thunder has been keeping busy lately shooting and editing several new videos, including Art In the City of Denver, another graf highlight reel he recently posted on YouTube, and the next installment of Lazy Sundayz, featuring a cast of MCs, Flawless, Fo Chief, Kontrast Purpose, Hi Res, DJ Skip Rip, Haven, Spellbinder, DealzMakesBeats, Whygee and J Money Mase. Keep an eye out for the impending release of that and the Mile High Madness Volume 5: Concert Edition below.
