The challenges facing local news organizations are very real. That's why reader support matters more than ever. If you believe independent journalism matters, make a contribution today and help us reach our summer fundraising goal of $25,000 by August 9.

$25,000

Whether you make folk art or simply admire it, the inaugural San Luis Valley Folk Arts and Fiber Festival has something for you: A combined artisan networking event and vendor fair, the weekend fest in Monte Vista (at the junction of U.S. highways 285 and 160, near the Great Sand Dunes) includes workshops, artist demonstrations and a crafters’ swap meet. It all begins today at 9 a.m. with a full lineup of workshops covering just about anything from papermaking to the art of knitting butterflies; shop the artisan fair, with live music, food, a raffle and craft-related contests with prizes for speed-knitting, yarn-spinning and the like, on Saturday and Sunday in Marsh Park, adjacent to Highway 160 on the east end of town.

Drive south: For details and registration, log on to www.slvfest.com.
