Uncle Joe’s Big Ol’ Driver, Wednesday, June 7, at the Mercury Cafe, plays the kind of meat-and-potatoes rock and roll that critics tend to love or hate depending upon how much they had to drink the night before. Chick Rock, the Drivers’ sophomore opus (on Headhunter Records) is no exception. Raunchy, irreverent and just plain ear-piercing, Chick finds the group kicking out the proverbial jams in the tradition of classic drunk-rockers like the Replacements, Meices, Urge Overkill and, well, a whole bunch of other bands I can’t think of right now. But who cares? The bottom line is, these boys play hard and they play loud. And if that’s not good enough for you, maybe you should just stay home and play some Parcheesi.
