Barley wine isn’t actually wine — it’s barley-made beer with an alcohol content between 8 and 12 percent. Because barley wine is closer in strength to wine than beer, it’s been labeled a wine, despite the fact that it’s brewed just like any other beer (and doesn’t contain any fermented fruit, besides).
Confused yet? You can educate yourself all month at Falling Rock Tap House, 1919 Blake Street, which kicks off its annual Dain Bramage celebration of barley wine at 11 a.m.
Alaskan Barley Wine, Dogfish Head Old School Barleywine and Golden City Centurion are among the brews on tap; Falling Rock has plenty of kegs of some varieties of barley wine, but only one five-gallon keg of others, so visit the tap house early and often to make sure you get a chance to taste all the barley wines you possibly can.
