When Jessica Carsten had to come up with a project for a leadership course she was taking, the assistant manager of the Boulder Planned Parenthood clinic naturally decided on a fundraiser for her employer. “I thought about what I would want to do, and my wildest dream would be a burlesque and drag show,” she says.
Carsten’s wild dream will materialize at La Rumba tonight with a Happy Hour and Burlesque/Drag Show at 5 p.m. Local burlesque star Vivienne VaVoom (aka Westword contributor Michelle Baldwin) inspired Carsten when she saw VaVoom tease the crowd at Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret recently. And tonight it will be VaVoom and regulars from Lannie’s who perform.
Recommended donations of $20 will be accepted at the door, 99 West Ninth Avenue. Proceeds from the event to “celebrate choice” will benefit Planned Parenthood of the Rockies. For information, contact team.choice@yahoo.com.

Will you step up to support Westword this year?
At Westword, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $20,000 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $50,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of Westword, now’s the time to give back.
