“You know Buntport — they’re kind of insane,” says Norma Moore, artistic director for Stories on Stage. Maybe that’s not what attracts you to a night out, but I can’t think of a better reason to head down to Buntport Theater, 717 Lipan Street, tonight at 7 p.m. for the opening of Stories on Stage: Tales of Mystery and Suspense.

This time around, Stories is highlighted by a layer of craziness as the Buntport players inject five dramatically read tales of suspense with sound and movement effects choreographed to create a cohesive whole. “When we do the Stories on Stage, we do more than just read them,” says Buntporter Brian Colonna. “We’d like to experiment with some of the Foley-type sounds — like they do for the movies — while not taking away from the suspense of the story. It’s like a machine. We’re showing the apparatus as it works.”

The five classic stories are Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Black Cat,” Neil Gaiman’s “We Can Get Them for You Wholesale,” Manuel Ramos’s “If We Had Been Dancing,” Roald Dahl’s “The Landlady” and Jack Ritchie’s “8.” Tickets are $22, with discounts available through the LoDough program.
